ELP: Applying your learning

4)
a. My target audience: the governments of rich countries.
b. What do I want to say? I want to encourage them to start building up relationships with the LEDCs who are in need and provide them with essential items of survival. That way, a change, slowly but surely, will happen.
How do I want to say it? I would talk about the various benefits and how this will eventually lead to a fairer world.
c. What are you going to make? I will make a poster.
d. I chose my target audience to be the governments of rich countries because they are the ones who make choices for their countries so if I am able to convince them to help the LEDCs, change in the world will be possible. I chose to say what and how I want in the way I have mentioned above because I feel that is the most efficient way to convey to them the advantages of doing so. I chose to make a poster because people tend to stop and look at them when a lot of them are pasted on the walls of streets.

ELP: What MDG am I investigating?

2. I am going to choose Global Partnership, because I think it is the most important out of the MDGs. If it didn’t exist, trading would not be possible, other countries will not help you in times of crisis, people will always be at war over natural resources, land, food, etc. This covers most of the MDGs at once. That is why I have chosen to investigate about Global Partnership.
3. The main aim of this MDG is to develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, non-discriminatory trading and financial system; also, to address the special needs of least developed countries.
These goals are essential to make this world a fairer place - there will be no more LEDCs, and people will help each other in times of crisis. The world will be a better place to live in. No wars, just harmony.
The UN Conference are coming to an agreement with MEDCs to donate medical treatment, food and other essential items to LEDCs.
They have increased the share of world trade for developing countries, strengthen South-South cooperation and transforming debt into public funds. “The share of world trade belonging to economies that are developing and in transition has increased to over 40 per cent, from 35 per cent in 2000.” “The Report of the UN Secretary-General on the state of South-South cooperation (2009) estimates that 40 per cent of FDI from countries of the South goes to highly vulnerable least developed countries, many of which are just emerging from conflict.” “Several countries have implemented Debt for Development Swaps and Virtual Poverty Funds to transform debt into public funds used to fight poverty.”

Millenium Development Goals (MDG) ELP

In my opinion, I think the MDGs are really important and they are the major keys to a "Fair World". If we could achieve those goals, all people will have equal rights and everyone would be able to live in perfect harmony. Among those MDGs, I find the 8th Goal the most important - Global Partnership. This is because if the rich and poor countries don't work together to achieve the goals, it will be very difficult to make even a slight change. Cooperation is the key. As the saying goes, 'Two is better than one'. More work can be done if countries cooperate collaboratively, and it will eventually lead to the achievement of the MDGs.

Can We Change The World? ELP

I have chosen to work on the second learning opportunity, which is to know more about the MDGs, investigate what the UN are doing and how successful it is. The reason is because I find the MDGs extremely important and if they can really be achieved, this world will be a fair place for everyone to live equally and in harmony. This is why I also want to learn about what some organisations are doing in order to help make these ambitions turn into reality.

A Quote From "The Power Of One"

A quote from "The Power Of One" - 'A waterfall starts but with one drop, and look what becomes of that.'

1. What do you think the quote means?

I think this quote means that if you want something to happen, you have to start by doing small things, which will slowly spread to the people around you. This creates the opportunity for you to do bigger things, and the others would follow. This cycle goes on and if you don't give up, your ambition would eventually be fulfilled.

2. Do you agree or disagree with the statement? Why?

I agree with this statement because when things change, it's usually because of one person. That one person will then start striving for his goal; eventually people will start helping him along the way, and his dream would be able to turn into reality.

3. How does this link with the topic 'A Fair World'?

'A Fair World' refers to everyone living fair and equally. For example, all people have equal rights, are able to obtain their standard needs without any difficulty, etc. Unfortunately this does not apply to everyone in reality. True, there are lots of people who have access to these priorities, but there are even more people who don't. In order to help the less fortunate, someone has to make a move first, then other people will eventually start contributing efforts; that way, it will be possible to make a change for the less fortunate. This is the same as the quote from "The Power Of One": 'A waterfall starts but with one drop, and look what becomes of that.'

Reflection on "A Fair World"

I think our topic, "A Fair World" is going to be about laws and order, how people are treated around the world, different opinions of people on whether this world is fair, etc. We are studying this topic because for centuries, there has been a debate on a "Fair World" - some people think it's fair, whereas others think differently; we are learning about the different opinions of people around the world and how the opinions shaped history into what we have today. The questions and investigations I am interested in are: how people thought about the "Fair World" in the past compared to how they think it is today; is this world actually considered as a "Fair World"?; what is "Fair" and "Unfair"? The list goes on. There are a lot of things I want to learn from this topic. I hope my various questions would be answered throughout the next few Humanities lessons.
